The Five Great Tea Regions of Japan

Each region produces a distinct character. Understanding terroir is the beginning of understanding tea.

Uji

UJI · KYOTO

Flavour: Deep umami, marine sweetness, low bitterness
Character: The benchmark. The oldest ceremonial-grade producing region in Japan.
Best for: Ceremony, meditation, gifting

Nishio

NISHIO · AICHI

Flavour: Bright, vegetal, grassy notes
Character: Japan's largest matcha-producing region. Consistent, accessible, excellent daily quality.
Best for: Daily practice, lattes, cooking

Shizuoka

SHIZUOKA

Flavour: Light, floral, clean finish
Character: Japan's largest overall tea region. Known for sencha and gyokuro; its matcha is delicate and aromatic.
Best for: First-timers, afternoon rituals

Yame

YAME · FUKUOKA

Flavour: Rich, bold, deeply savoury
Character: High elevation, clay soil, long shading. Produces some of Japan's most complex gyokuro and matcha.
Best for: Connoisseurs, pairing

Kagoshima

KAGOSHIMA

Flavour: Mild, slightly sweet, smooth
Character: Volcanic soil, subtropical climate. A fast-growing region producing accessible, clean-tasting matcha.
Best for: Subscription, daily use
